Description

This group is supportive because it offers a confidential environment where clinicians can openly share their challenges and successes, receive constructive feedback, and learn from one another’s experiences. The consistent membership throughout the 12 weeks fosters trust and deeper connections, enabling participants to explore complex cases and personal reflections in a non-judgmental setting.

This group will meet weekly on zoom for 90 minutes and is intended for those who are already practicing Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). We expect applicants to have been practicing KAP for at least one year.

Fluence Trainer, Jayne Gumpel, LCSW, will bring her deep experience and passion for experiential interventions, including poetry and guided visualizations, into this course. Her approach will enrich the group experience by offering creative ways to explore and process clinical material. Jayne provides a structured approach to case presentations and feedback that allow for professional and personal development in a safe container.

Members will have the opportunity to submit and present case material from their own practices during the group to receive feedback and guide discussions. The group will be a supportive environment with the same confidentiality parameters as a psychotherapy group. While personal sharing is encouraged, this is not a venue for therapists to discuss any underground work with psychedelics that they may have done as a therapist. The group is open to practicing, licensed clinicians of all backgrounds, but will emphasize psychological, mindfulness, and psychodynamic perspectives.

Enrollment in this course is available by application only and group membership is limited to 10 participants.

A limited number of Diversity Fund scholarships are available, please complete this application, in addition to the course application.

Learning Objectives

  • Assess and reflect on the motivations for which patients seek KAP.
  • Assess and verbalize the complex motivations of patients to seek out and use ketamine.
  • Rate the variety of subjective experiences and emotions patients report with ketamine with nonjudgmental curiosity.
  • Describe and acknowledge therapist reactions to patients who are seeking KAP.
  • Rate in equal esteem ketamine experiences that are thoughtful and growth oriented and ones that are recreational, spontaneous, or dissociative.
  • Assess and articulate how KAP can amplify transference.
  • Assess and articulate how transferences to ketamine can become fused with therapist transferences.
  • Prepare for shifts in language, meaning, and self-concept that may accompany experiences with ketamine.
  • Explain openly (in appropriate settings) about emotional responses (countertransference) to patient reports as they relate to the therapist’s own relationship to psychedelic therapy.
  • Describe states of psychic disruption that suggest a need for more intensive treatment.
  • Describe extended support services for the patient, including family or community resources.
  • Plan the support of non-drug self-transformation efforts as part of KAP.
